Tips for Brushing Your Teeth

Everyone has heard of how important it is to brush your teeth twice a day and to floss regularly. This is great advice from the dental community and can help you keep your mouth healthy and your teeth strong. But just because you know you should brush your teeth does not mean that you know how to do it correctly. There is a lot of talk about how you should brush your teeth and the best way to do it. Below are some tips that can help you get the most out of the time that you are brushing your teeth.

  1. The Motions. You may have heard that you should brush using small circular motions. This is a good way to brush but not the only way. In fact, a study shows that smooth and gentle horizontal motions while holding the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle may be the best way to brush your teeth. This ensures that both the teeth and gums are scrubbed and cleaned.
  2. Brush the Tongue. Another tip that some people will often neglect is that of scrubbing the tongue with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. When you brush the tongue, you are removing bacteria. This bacteria could spread to the teeth if it is not removed. Brushing your tongue will also ensure that your breath smells fresher.
  3. Change It Up. Something else that can help while brushing is to change up the routine. Instead of starting with the same teeth and going in the same order every day, start with a different part of your mouth. This can help to ensure that you spend an adequate amount of time on other areas of your mouth that you might otherwise neglect. The teeth in the back that are hard to reach can sometimes be neglected. Try starting with those teeth and making sure they are brushed thoroughly.
  4. Consistency. One of the most important things is making sure that you stay consistent and on a regular schedule. Make brushing part of your regular schedule. Maybe you do it first thing when you wake up, right after breakfast, in the shower or at some other time. My making it part of your schedule, you will be more likely to remember to do it.

These are just some of the ways that you will be able to make brushing your teeth a better experience and really get the most out of it. For more information, talk to a dentist.
